Winter Weather Woodies

In the late season of 2024 after a major cold front swept the nation in the early weeks of January with ice, snow, sleet shutting down major highways & interstates. Two members of the crew headed down to Oxford, MS to meet up with some old college buddies to go a little duck hunting for a few days.

After heading out at 2AM to make the boat launch, we found it to be frozen up and decided to move onto the next ramp after helping the boat in front of us get out of the ice. We then tried our odds at two other boat ramps and all hope was lost for the morning hunt as it approached 7AM. However, on our way to head back home there was a boat ramp on a decent size river under the bridge we were about to cross. We decided to launch for shits and giggles. Once we made it a half mile down the chute, we couldn’t believe our eyes as we approached a mess of hundreds and possibly thousand’s of Wood Ducks. As we were in awe, we quickly made a move to set up as fast as possible in a collapsed tree on the edge of the river covered in feathers and duck scat. We had ducks decoying into our sights before we even had decoys out. As we became fully set up it took no longer than 30 minutes to reach our 5 man limit of Wood Ducks. As the hunt finished we all agreed to come back the next morning and call everyone we could to load up the hole with as many shooters as possible.

The following day, we gathered up eight shooters back to the honey hole and shuttled us to the hole in multiple groups as we only had one boat. When shooting light came there was no shortage of action once it started. We quickly got an eight man limit of Wood Ducks with a couple of bonus ducks with a Mallard, and two Hooded Mergansers. It was an unforgettable hunt with the shit show it brought and good times with friends new and old. It turned out to be a fantastic hunt but it was never about the harvest.
